“The Shifting Sands of English – Generational Impact on Language”

October 13,2025 The Department of English Language held a Workshopn titled “The Shifting Sands of English: Generational Impact on Language,” as part of the workshop series “Improving Fluency: Strategies to Build Confidence in Writing.” The first session was presented by Asst. Lecturer Lana D. Miran, and the second by Asst. Lecturer Bestoon Salah.

Presented by Asst. Lecturer Lana D. Miran, the session explored how different generations from the Silent Generation to Generation Alpha have shaped and influenced the English language. Through interactive discussion, participants examined the rise of generational slang, digital communication, and platforms like TikTok as modern “language laboratories.” The session concluded with an engaging activity, “Guess the Slang in the Sentence!”, encouraging participants to connect linguistic theory with everyday language use.

The second session, presented by Asst. Lecturer Bestoon Salah, focused on the natural evolution of language in his talk titled “Why Language Always Changes.” He explained how each generation contributes to linguistic transformation through innovation, cultural shifts, and technological influence. The discussion emphasized that language change is not a sign of decline but rather a reflection of creativity and adaptation supporting the “It’s Enriching!” argument that celebrates diversity in linguistic expression.
