The Department Computer Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science in Lebanese French University organized a culture activity entitleled ” Food Story” on February 27, 2024, at 12 a.m. . This activity used the cultural element of food to help us to understand our own cultures and cultural biases when dealing with unfamiliar foods. This activity introduced a historical story about the origin of food from the region’s geography and also as a cultural expression. Students collected information from several thematic maps and discuss the connections between food origins and geographical regions.
The purpose of this event was:
- Students will be able to explain that the food eaten in a region tells a story of that place.
- Students will be able to use information from reading maps to connect ingredients of traditional foods to the geographic conditions necessary to grow those products.
- Students will be able to acknowledge their own cultural biases when it comes to unfamiliar foods, showing that their experiences affect their cultural perceptions.
Outcomes
- The activity provides students with an opportunity to reflect on their group discussions and draw conclusions about food and culture.
- The food we eat can convey a message about ourselves to others. It can connect us with people who share our culture.
- It can be used to teach others about our culture.
- Show the cultural similarities and differences between different countries or societies using certain popular foods.
