A National Workshop: Improving Fluency: Strategies to Build Confidence in Speaking and Writing

On Monday, June 2, 2025, the College of Education and Languages, Department of English Language, hosted a national workshop titled “Improving Fluency: Strategies to Build Confidence in Speaking and Writing.” The workshop aimed to provide educators with practical strategies to enhance students’ language fluency and boost their confidence in communication.

The first session, led by Asst. Lect. Lana Dlawar Miran from the Department of English Language at Lebanese French University, focused on “Improving Fluency – Strategies to Build Confidence in Writing.” She introduced a range of instructional techniques designed to help students write more smoothly and effectively, emphasizing methods such as structured practice, scaffolding, and sentence-building exercises to overcome common writing challenges.

The second session, presented by Asst. Lect. Bestoon Saleh, also from Lebanese French University, focused on “Improving Fluency – Strategies to Build Confidence in Speaking.” He explored interactive and student-centered strategies to develop speaking fluency, including role-play, pair work, and guided discussion. He highlighted the importance of creating a supportive environment that encourages learners to speak without fear of making mistakes, thereby enhancing both fluency and self-confidence.

  • Identify common barriers that hinder students’ confidence in communication.
  • Explore effective strategies to build fluency in both writing and speaking.

  • Develop practical approaches for engaging students with different communication strengths and challenges.
