Module Overview

This module provides postgraduate participants with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in academic research and scholarly development within higher education. It introduces fundamental research concepts, methodologies, and ethics while emphasizing the importance of quality publications and academic integrity. Participants will gain hands-on experience in identifying reputable journals, avoiding predatory and fake journals, understanding impact factors and indexing systems, and navigating research platforms. The module also develops competencies in academic writing, referencing, citation styles, and the use of digital research tools. By the end of the module, participants will be equipped to produce publishable research and contribute meaningfully to knowledge production and academic impact in their fields.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this module, participants will be able to:

Explain fundamental research concepts, designs, and methodologies applicable to higher education research
Identify reputable journals and publishers and differentiate them from predatory and fake journals using indexing databases and evaluation criteria
Interpret research impact indicators such as impact factor, citation metrics, h-index, and journal rankings
Demonstrate the process of academic publishing including journal selection, manuscript preparation, submission, peer review, and revision
Apply appropriate academic referencing and citation styles using reference management tools
Utilize digital research tools and platforms to enhance research visibility and impact
