The General Education Department in College of Education and Languages organized a workshop entitled “Linguistic Landscape: What Signs Reveal About Society” on 2 February 2026, focusing on the linguistic landscape of Erbil.
The workshop was presented by Dr. Nahlah N. Khorsheed who explored the concept of linguistic landscape as a field of study that analyzes written language on public signs, including street signs, shop names, advertisements, and official notices. Through examples from Erbil, participants discussed how the presence and distribution of different languages reveal issues related to identity, power, multilingualism, and language policy.
Special attention was given to the coexistence of Kurdish, Arabic, English, and other languages in Erbil’s public space, and what this diversity indicates about social change, globalization, and educational practices in the Kurdistan Region.
Learning outcomes of the workshop included developing participants’ ability to identify and analyze linguistic landscapes, understand the social meanings of language choices in public spaces, and apply linguistic landscape analysis to educational and sociolinguistic research.

بەشداربووان بە بەکارهێنانی نمونەی هەولێر تاوتوێیان کرد کە چۆن هەبوون و بڵاوبوونەوەی زمانە جیاوازەکان ڕەنگدانەوەی کێشەکانی پەیوەست بە ناسنامە و دەسەڵات و فرە زمان و سیاسەتی زمان دەکات. بایەخێکی تایبەت بە پێکەوەژیانی زمانی کوردی و عەرەبی و ئینگلیزی و زمانەکانی تر لە شوێنە گشتییەکانی هەولێر درا و ئەو جیاوازییە زمانەوانیانە سەبارەت بە گۆڕانکارییە کۆمەڵایەتییەکان و جیهانگیری و پراکتیزەکردنی پەروەردەیی لە هەرێمی کوردستاندا دەردەخات. دەرئەنجامەکانی فێربوونی وۆرکشۆپەکە بریتی بوون لە بەهێزکردنی توانای بەشداربووان بۆ ناساندن و شیکردنەوە
