A National Workshop on “The Nature of Kurdish National Identity” Held by General Education Department, College of Education and Language, Lebanese French University

Erbil – June 11, 2025

The Department of General Education held an engaging academic workshop titled “The Nature of Kurdish National Identity” on Wednesday, June 11, bringing together scholars to explore the foundations and theoretical frameworks of Kurdish nationalism.

The workshop opened with a session led by Dr. Ahmed Aziz, who highlighted the significance of ethnic bonds in the formation of national identity. Dr. Ahmed emphasized that a deep understanding of ethnic ties—such as shared language, culture, and collective memories is essential in analyzing Kurdish identity within the broader context of nation-building.

The second session, presented by Dr. Nahlah N. Khorsheed, focused on the nature of Kurdish national identity and its theoretical associations. Dr. Nahlah examined the evolution of Kurdish identity through the lens of three prominent theories of nationalism: Benedict Anderson’s Imagined Communities, Ernest Gellner’s theory of state-driven nationalism, and Anthony D. Smith’s ethno-symbolism. The presentation concluded that Kurdish national identity aligns most closely with Smith’s ethno-symbolist approach, given its strong reliance on historical myths, cultural symbols, and collective memory passed through generations, even in the absence of a state framework.

Workshop Outcome

  • Participants emphasized the multi-layered and evolving nature of Kurdish national identity.
  • The workshop reinforced that ethnic roots, cultural heritage, and historical memory are central to Kurdish identity.
  • It was concluded that Anthony D. Smith’s ethno-symbolist theory most accurately reflects the Kurdish experience of nationalism.
  • The importance of education, media, and political discourse in shaping national identity was acknowledged.
  • Attendees agreed on the need for continued academic research and dialogue on Kurdish nationalism.
  • The event encouraged greater engagement among scholars, educators, and students to deepen understanding of national identity in the Kurdistan Region.
