On December 10, 2024, the Department of Medical Laboratory Science at the College of Health Sciences, Lebanese French University, hosted a national workshop titled “Blood Transfusion and Hematological Disorders (BT&HDs).” This event was organized under the supervision of Assistant Lecturer (Ms. Muzhda H. Saber), a Medical Geneticist and Genetic Counselor, and aimed to gather academics and specialists to discuss cutting-edge topics in the fields of blood transfusion, hematological disorders, and associated medical sciences.
The workshop addressed various crucial themes, including hematologic genetic diseases, prenatal diagnosis (PND), cancer, cord blood banking, and iron deficiency anemia (IDA). The program was structured into four primary sessions, each designed to provide participants with theoretical knowledge, practical insights, and opportunities for networking and collaboration.

- Presentations by Specialists
The first session featured presentations by two distinguished specialists, focusing on blood transfusion practices and the genetic relationships between blood diseases and transfusion.- Dr. Shoxan Muhammad Mustafa, an M.B.CH.B. and F.K.B.M.S. Clinical Hematologist from Nanakali Hospital for Blood Diseases and Cancer in Erbil, provided insights into clinical hematology, highlighting advancements in blood transfusion and its role in treating hematological disorders.
- Ms. Muzhda H. Saber, an Assistant Lecturer and expert in medical genetics, discussed the genetic basis of blood disorders and their implications for transfusion medicine. These presentations provided a comprehensive overview of both clinical and genetic perspectives, emphasizing their interconnection.
- Poster Exhibition
The second session showcased 13 posters prepared by fourth-grade students of the department, accompanied by informative leaflets. These exhibits covered a wide range of topics, from blood donation processes to advancements in genetic research related to hematological disorders. - Practical Laboratory Tests
In the third session, participants engaged in hands-on laboratory testing, focusing on Immunohematological tests that play a pivotal role in transfusion medicine and hematological diagnostics. - Sweet and Food Fundraising Session
The final session included a community-building activity involving sweet and food fundraising. This segment not only provided an opportunity for informal networking but also helped support the university’s initiatives in research and education.
