National Workshop ( Hate Speech Detection in social Media(Twitter) using Neural Network)

The faculty of Engineering and Computer Science, department of Information Technology organized a national workshop entitled: ‘Hate Speech Detection in social Media(Twitter) using Neural Network’ for faculty members on 29th , October, 2023. The session lasted from (1:00 – 3:00) pm. The session was presented by: (Asst. Lect. Ara Zozan Miran) from Lebanese French University, Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science, department of Information Technology.

Workshop Outcomes:

The workshop has focused on identifying an ensemble classifier for the purpose of detecting hate speech in short texts, particularly tweets. This classifier integrates machine learning techniques and incorporates various features related to users’ behavior, including the inclination to post abusive messages. The workshop has made several significant contributions to advance the state-of-the-art in this field. Firstly, it has developed a machine learning architecture that employs word frequency vectorization to implement the aforementioned features. This approach enables language independence by not requiring pre-trained word embeddings. Secondly, a method has been proposed that utilizes a publicly available dataset of labeled tweets and an open-sourced implementation based on Keras to evaluate the proposed model. This evaluation encompasses performance analysis for different categories of users. Lastly, the workshop has enhanced the classifier’s performance by integrating additional user-based features into the prediction mechanism.
