Students’ Motivation toward Learning English at Secondary

ABSTRACT
Recently, interest in the English language has greatly increased in the Kurdistan Region
in general and Erbil in particular. This study, entitled "Student Motivation to Learn
English in Secondary Schools in the Kurdistan Region," aims to find the level of
motivation among intermediate school students to learn English. The quantitative method
was used in this study. Data was collected through a questionnaire prepared by the
researchers containing 15 items. Each student's answers to the questionnaire were
recorded at specific values; 1 = Strongly disagree, 2 = Disagree, 3 = Neutral, 4 = Agree,
5 = Strongly agree. Statistical package (SPSS) was used to find the mean, standard
deviation, correlation, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) to analyze the data and examine
the validity and reliability of the questionnaire. A random sample of (107) male and
female students was selected from seven schools for the academic year (2022-2023). The
findings indicate that the total mean of the English language learning for students was
(3.33020), this that the students in general have positive motivation toward learning
English, but in the same time we noticed that the students show poor performance in
communication, reading, and writing. Finally, the researchers made some
recommendations to improve the teaching of English in secondary schools for students to
help them understand the language in a way that they can benefit from in all areas of
scientific and social life.
