On Wednesday, February 19th, 2025, College of Education and Languages, the Department of English Language held a national workshop entitled “The influence of AI on Literature “. The workshop’s first session was presented by Asst. Lect. Ala Beshank Ahmed, an instructor at the Department of English Language. At the beginning of the workshop, she addressed the advantages of AI tools in literature. For example, AI can assist writers to enhance their story telling by suggesting plot twists and better character developments. AI can also recommend books to readers. This can help authors reach the audience on a larger scale.
The second session was presented by Asst. Lect. Meram Salim Shekh Mohamad, an instructor at the Department of English Language. She discussed the disadvantages of AI in literature. For instance, there are challenges and ethical considerations regarding preserving human thought and emotion as well as copyright and authorship issues.
At the end, the presenters organized an activity with the audience in which they attempted to show a poem written by Emily Dickinson and a poem written by AI to try to show how AI may lack emotion and empathy while attempting to write poetry.
Workshop Outcomes:
1. AI would become a good assistant but not a replacement.
2. We cannot avoid AI but it has to be censored, considering the ethical principles of using it.
