National Workshop: “Processor Technology Era: Power and Performance”

The Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science, Department of Computer Engineering, organized a national workshop titled: “Processor Technology Era: Power and Performance” for faculty members on February 4, 2024. The meeting lasted from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The session was moderated by: (Prof. Dr. Diary R. Sulaiman) from Lebanese-French University, Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science, Department of Computer Engineering.

Workshop Outcomes:

  • Processor development has driven the increase in computing power over the years.
  • The most important milestones include the invention of transistors, the development of integrated circuits, the birth of microprocessors and the introduction of multi-core systems.
  • Processor development has had a profound impact on industry, enabling advances in areas such as industrial automation, data analytics and healthcare.
  • Challenges in processor development include reaching the physical limits of Moore’s Law and the complexity of manufacturing.
  • Power consumption has become the limiting barrier to future growth in single processor performance.
  • The future of processor technology holds exciting trends and innovations such as quantum computing and advanced materials.
  • A promising approach to enable more energy-efficient computations is the design of application-specific or algorithm-specific computing units.
