On Thursday, January 25th, 2024, College of Education and Languages, Department English language held an international workshop entitled “Understanding Semantics & Pragmatics: A Pre-requisite for Professional Translation”. The workshop’s first session was presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmed Abdulaziz Mahyoub Alabbasi, Head of Translation Section Communication and Public Relations Department, Qatar University. Dr. Alabbasi, at the beginning of the workshop, discussed semantics which is the systematic study of meaning, whereas pragmatics is the systematic study of language in use. As for translation, it is an operational process, whereby the elements of source language are replaced by the elements of target language. These elements are lexicons، syntactic structures, semantic elements, stylistic elements, pragmatic elements, cultural elements. In the second session, Prof. Dr. Misbah Al-Sulaimaan, an instructor at Department of English Language, Lebanese French University. Prof. Dr. Al-Sulaimaan, explained that the conclusion of the workshop is that professional translators should understand both semantics and pragmatics before embarking into the process of translating.
Workshop Outcomes:
- Participants gained a deeper appreciation for the complex role of meaning in translation, understanding that it goes beyond simply replacing words in different languages.
- The workshop sparked discussions and reflections on the challenges and nuances of translating semantic and pragmatic elements, such as cultural references, idioms, and implicit meaning.
- Participants left with practical strategies and tools to improve their translation skills by taking semantics and pragmatics into account.
