National Workshop (Combining Approximate String Matching Algorithms and Term Frequency in the Detection of Plagiarism)

The faculty of Engineering and Computer Science, department of Computer Engineering organized a national workshop entitled: “Combining Approximate String Matching Algorithms and Term Frequency in the Detection of Plagiarism” for faculty members on 7 Dec., 2023. The session lasted from 1 to 3 pm. The session was presented by: (Asst. Lect. Zina Balani ) from Lebanese French University, Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science, department of Information Technology.

Workshop Outcomes:

  • This study combined both the Levenshtein edit distance based approximate string matching algorithm and the term frequency inverse document frequency TF-IDF, thereby increases the score of similarity measured using cosine similarity.
  • The robust hybrid algorithm is also able to detect
    • Plagiarism from both the natural language and source codes.
    • Different forms of plagiarism can be detected such as (reorganization of words and inter-textual similarity of insertion / deletion).
