  • The teaching of French in schools in Erbil holds a significant influence among the Kurdish public and is based on an ambitious vision of education. It aims to equip learners with the necessary linguistic skills to navigate an increasingly interconnected world. Whether for professional, academic, or personal reasons, numerous students are turning to French as a key language for their future. This is evident from the fact that eight schools offer French courses. As students in the French department and future educators, this subject holds particular significance to us, which is why we have chosen it as the topic for our first research paper.

The objective of this study is to identify the public schools in the region that offer French language instruction and understand the reasons behind the lack of systematization. Currently, the teaching of French is limited to specific public schools and certain classes, with the language not being integrated into the baccalaureate examination. To gather relevant information, we engaged in discussions with various teachers from public schools who teach French.

To address the research question, which revolves around the challenges of teaching French in schools, we conducted several interviews. These interviews were conducted with teachers from all eight public schools in Erbil. It should be noted that, it is worth noting that some schools have been selected by the Ministry of Education to teach French, and apart from one teacher, the educators responsible for teaching French are not specialized in the language. However, despite this, students in these schools hold a deep appreciation for the French language. Both the school administrators and teachers encourage their students to learn French, ensuring a consistent teaching approach, even with only two hours of classes per week.
