How Does Second Language Affect the Identity of Individuals?

On Monday, February 21, 2022, the Department of English held the national workshop entitled ‘How Does Second Language Affect the Identity of Individuals?’ The workshop’s first session was presented by Meram Shekh Salim, assistant lecturer in College of Education and Languages at Lebanese French University. She introduced the topic to the audience and discussed the importance of the topic. In the second session, Nian Saeed, assistant lecturer in College of Education and Languages at Lebanese French University provided detailed and vital information on the topic. She explained the fact that society and language are interrelated and we have a field in linguistics which is called sociolinguistics. She discussed that sociolinguistics tries to study the aspects of society which affects individuals through language. When individuals learn a second language then the society of that second language affects the individuals generally and their identity specifically.

Workshop Outcome

  1. The participants learned about the importance and effect of language on human’s identity.
  2. The same effect of first language on individuals is possible to happen when individuals try to learn a second language.
