On Thursday, December 2, 2021, the Department of English held the national workshop entitled “Approaches to Meaning” The first session of the workshop was presented by, Prof. Dr. Misbah Al- Sulaimaan he Explained that meaning is a message conveyed by a speaker to the listener via a code. This code can be linguistic or non-linguistic. Also, it can be defined as a mental state that the speaker attempts to create it in the mind of the listener by means of a linguistic expression. Meaning is a very complex linguistic phenomenon. To understand its nature a multidisciplinary approach is needed, just like linguistic, semantic, pragmatic, stylistic, and logical approaches. In the second session Asst. Lect. Meram Salim Shekh Mohamad represented some samples of meaning based on the first session’s explanations.
Workshop Outcome
Meaning Revisited Meaning is a living structure. It is the most complicated phenomenon among many other phenomena across all other disciplines. Meaning is a message conveyed by the sender to the receiver via a code. This code can be either linguistic or non-linguistic. Others say: meaning is a mental state that the sender can create it in the mind of the receiver. So, to understand the nature of meaning a multidisciplinary study is needed.
