A National Workshop: Literature Pharmacy

On Wednesday, April 23rd, 2025, College of Education and Languages, the Department of English Language held a national workshop entitled “Literature Pharmacy “. The workshop’s first session was presented by Asst.Lect. Ala Beshank Ahmed, an instructor at the Department of English Language. At the beginning of the workshop, she discussed the concept of “poetry pharmacy” which is a type of library opened by the British poet Deborah Alma. The library contains poetic remedies that are sold for the specific needs of the customers. Furthermore, she discussed how poetry can be used as a type of therapy that in the busy days of the modern world, we need to slow down and read a book or poetry that can help heal from the wounds of life.

The workshop’s second session was presented by Asst. Lect. Meram Salim Shekh Mohamad, an instructor at the Department of English Language. She discussed the concept of bibliotherapy as it was first used by Greeks, they placed their libraries next to their hospitals intending to declare that hospitals are for physical cure, but libraries cure the soul and mind. Furthermore, she mentioned the specific emotional problems finding poems and novels to deal with such issues.

They discussed how literature and poetry would help with Alzheimer’s and dementia as two mental disorders.

Workshop Outcomes:

  1. The participants choose the pills from the topics they felt they should work on.  
  2.  They thought the idea of the workshop was new, and it should be introduced so that people can cope with anxiety and depression through literature and reading.
