Theories of Meaning Reviseited

On Thursday, October 27, 2022, the Department of English held the national workshop entitled “Theories of Meaning Revisited”. Asst. Lect. Meram Salim presented an introduction about what is Meaning, and the Approaches to meaning. She explained that meaning is a message conveyed by a speaker to the listener via a code. This code can be linguistic or non-linguistic. Also, it can be defined as a mental state that the speaker attempts to create it in the mind of the listener by means of a linguistic expression. Meaning is a very complex linguistic phenomenon. Then Prof. Dr. Misbah Al- Sulaimaan presented the Approaches to Meaning via diagrams. To understand its nature a multidisciplinary approach is needed, just like linguistic, semantic, pragmatic, stylistic, and logical approaches. He presented samples of meaning based on the approaches explained.

Workshop Outcome

Meaning is a living structure. It is the most complicated phenomenon among many other phenomena across all other disciplines. For example meaning is abstract and; therefore, cannot be realized, recognized and touched. The second reason is that meaning is not stable. It varies from one context to another. It also varies through the course of time.
